If synthetic fragrances are derived from chemicals, natural perfumes are made from plant materials raw materials such as flowers, leaves, stems, wood, roots, seeds and resins from which essential oils, absolutes and floral waxes are extracted. Those composed solely of vegetable essences are also called "botanical" and are generally vegan and not tested on animals.
Natural fragrances offer a unique smell on contact with the skin. This personalized fragrance evolves throughout the day as the top notes gradually reveal those of the heart before subtly giving way to the base notes.
A natural perfume consists of oils essentials, natural extracts, alcnatural ool or vegetable oil and water. We can also find absolutes, concretes, aromas, floral waxes, dantioxidants used as a preservatives naturals and sometimes glycerin.
Essential oils come fromconcentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor of the plant. Each essential oil then has its characteristic essence. They are obtained by steam distillation or by methods such as cold pressing.
A natural extract is a compound produced by a plant or fruit that has been removed from the raw material from which it is derived by techniques such as extraction, distillation or roasting. The aromatic substance obtained is a concentrate of taste and scent of the plant or fruit. It is then diluted in a solvent such as water, alcohol, glycerin or vinegar.
There is also supercritical fluid extraction such as CO2. The gas pressurized at a certain temperature makes it possible to recover the olfactory molecules. This method is very interesting for the fidelity of the odors that it provides. For more information, you can read our article Extraction methods.
Alcohol is essential to fix fragrant essences. In natural perfumes, it is vegetal, made through a fermentation process from fruit, sugar cane or cereals such as wheat. It can also be of biological origin.
Vegetable oil is oil extracted from various fruits, seeds, grains and nuts usually by cold pressing. Like alcohol, it allows odorous molecules to stick to the skin and retain their fragrance.
The absolute is a liquid extracted from a plant or flower by cold enfleurage and treated with alcohol to preserve the often fragile raw material. Very concentrated, a single drop brings a pronounced base note.
The concretes come from plants and undergo several washings with a solvent. After decantation, filtering and evaporation of the solvent, this fragrant material is obtained.
An aroma is an aromatic substance extracted from a plant or a fruit such as vanilla aroma that is obtained by extraction, concentration, distillation, roasting, fermentation or enzymatic reaction.
Natural and organic perfumes remove controversial ingredients such as silicones, dyes, surfactants, phthalates, parabens from their compositions. They also remove all synthetics, i.e. petrochemicals made from petroleum.
A natural perfume is made from natural raw materials but is not necessarily organic. For this, it must meet the many criteria of organic certification. In particular, it must be made from organic ingredients derived from non-genetically modified plants, grown in protected and sustainable environments in which no toxic substances are used either during the cultivation or harvesting of these raw materials.
Unlike a synthetic perfume whose list of ingredients is very complex, that of natural perfumes is much simpler and ensures the absence of harmful chemical components such as synthetic musks, phthalates or parabens.
To recognize a natural fragrance, it is essential to learn how to read the ingredient labels. Names made up of many words, codes or numbers are probably chemical ingredients. We will rather find the words "ethanol" or "alcohol" in reference to the plant from which comes the alcohol, essential oils, natural extracts or other vegetable perfume.
Finally, you should know that natural does not necessarily mean derived from plants, it can include substances of animal origin such as milk or honey. A natural fragrance only made from plants can be labeled vegan.
This is an independent French organization for the control and certification of products from organic farming. This label guarantees manufacturing using raw materials from renewable resources and processes that respect the planet.. It certifies the absence of GMOs, parabens, silicones, PEG, phenoxyethanol, nanoparticles, PEG, synthetic fragrances and dyes, ingredients from animals except ingredients that they produce naturally such as honey, milk or eggs. Ecocert also verifies that the packaging used is biodegradable or recyclable.
To be labeled Ecocert, a product must contain at least 95% plant ingredients from organic farming and at least 10% organic ingredients.
This is why Virevolte obtained this label with perfumes with 99.9% ingredients of natural origin and 81% of the total ingredients which are from Organic Farming.
This expert association in organic and natural cosmetics ensures products that respect people and the environment. The Cosmébio charter is based on three commitments:
Cosmos (or COSMetic Organic Standard) is an international and independent association whose founding members (BDIH - Germany, Cosmebio - France, Ecocert - France, ICEA - Italy and Soil Association - United Kingdom) bring their expertise to standardize the guarantees offered by each.
This label certifies compliance with the levels of natural and/or organic ingredients, endangered species and waste management on each production site. To be certified Cosmos Organic, a product must contain a minimum of 95% organic ingredients of the total and a minimum of 20% of the finished product. On the other hand, to be labeled Cosmos Natural, a product must be of 95% natural origin.
Nature & Progrès defends organic farming that respects people, animals, plants and the planet, while preserving the farming profession.
To be Nature&Progrès certified, cosmetics must not contain GMOs or synthetic chemical substances. The ingredients must come from organic farming and at least 70% of the brand's products must be Nature&Progrès certified.
Natrue is an NGO that protects natural and organic cosmetics. It allows only natural and processed components of natural origin as well as recyclable packaging and limited to the strict minimum. Natrue includes 3 levels of certification:
These certifications are the most frequently used but there are many others such as Demeter, Qualité France or Cruelty Free which takes animal welfare into account.
